  2.      Many  older style  bikes have
  3. crank  cotters. These  are special
  4. bolts,  one   goes  thorough  each
  5. crank,  holding  it  to  the crank
  6. axle.  In time  they become  worn,
  7. which causes a clunky looseness as
  8. you turn the  pedals. To replace a
  9. cotter,  remove the  nut, and  hit
  10. the  threaded end  with a  hammer.
  11. Normally, the cotter will slip out
  12. of its hole. If it doesn't, try to
  13. avoid killing it with your hammer.
  14. You may need to heat up the crank,
  15. or  drill  the   cotter  out.  Put
  16. grease on the  new cotter, tighten
  17. the nut on, tap  it lightly with a
  18. hammer  and retighten  it. Cotters
  19. are    soft   steel,    so   don't
  20. over-tighten the nut.
